BRASS

BRASS

The minimum recommended age for tuition in Brass instruments is seven.

WCSM offers tuition in a variety of Brass instruments, including the Trumpet, the Trombone and Brass Band instruments. Students are prepared for participation in Brass Bands, Orchestras, or modern music groups. Brass Band instruments are those usually found in a ‘British’ style band. Those taught at WCSM include Bb Cornet, Eb Tenor Horn, Bb Baritone horn, Bb Euphonium and Bb Tenor Trombone.

All other ensembles use Bass clef for Baritone, Euphonium , Trombones, and all basses/Tubas.

FRENCH HORN

The French Horn is in a category of its own: the student should be age ten minimum, and should have at least one term of individual lessons before participating in a Brass class.

TENOR HORN

The Tenor Horn is an alto range instrument pitched in E-flat that is used in British-style brass bands. It looks like a small Euphonium and is built to use a mouthpiece that is roughly half way between a cornet and a Euphonium mouthpiece

TRUMPET

The Trumpet is played by blowing air through nearly-closed lips and produces a sound in the highest register of the Brass family.

TROMBONE

Orchestral trombone is taught in bass clef, while a brass band player reads treble clef. Bass Trombone is the odd man out and is in Bass clef. All Brass Band instruments can have been and are at times used in all types of ensembles/ groups etc. The division is that Brass Band players ALL learn to play in treble clef, except the Bass trombone.
