ENSEMBLES

GROUP ENSEMBLES

WCSM offers a number of ensembles, bands and orchestras, providing an integrated system for students wishing to develop their group music-making skills and experience. The groups progressively teach core ensemble skills such as listening and section playing, and also provide regular performance opportunities.

FLUTE ENSEMBLES

Concentrating on smaller numbers, using a range of duo, trio and quartet repertoire to learn some of the basic ensemble skills.

GUITAR ENSEMBLES

There are two or three guitar ensembles available to classical guitar students, from beginners to advanced level.  Ensembles provide a unique opportunity for guitar students to develop ensemble skills and for classes of similar abilities to join together.

The Beginners and Intermediate Ensembles focus on learning basic rhythm guitar techniques (chords and strumming) and as students become more familiar with reading music, guitar ensemble pieces are introduced (duets, trios and quartets).

UKULELE ENSEMBLES

Opportunity to further develop playing technique and learn to play as a group member.

CONCERT BAND

With the emphasis on creativity and enjoyment, the basic ensemble skills can be learned.

STRING ORCHESTRA

Provides early development of string ensemble techniques in a wide range of musical styles.

Participation in the WCSM String Orchestra is available to all Violin, Viola, and Cello students who have had at least one year’s experience and who also have reasonable music reading skills. The aim of the orchestra is to encourage and develop ensemble skills in the student whilst he/she creates music with fellow musicians.

SINFONIA

The Sinfonia Orchestra bridges the gap between beginner ensembles and more-advanced community orchestral groups. It is open to Woodwind, Brass, Percussion and String players. Sinfonia plays a wide range of repertoire from classical to contemporary and film music, and regularly performs at the music centre and at events in the central Waikato. Students learn how to play in a symphony orchestra in a positive learning environment, where they are supported and mentored by their fellow orchestra members, music centre tutors and the Music Director.

The Sinfonia Orchestra is open to any Woodwind, Brass, Percussion or String player who has passed Grade 2 on his/her instrument (equivalent to 2 – 3 years of study).
