The “Music Theory” course covers the basic elements of the language of music, how it is written, how music is structured and the technical terms used to describe it.
The course is designed to be helpful for students who want to deepen their understanding of music or explore professional music studies. When you advance to learn refined and complex pieces it is necessary to have an understanding of how music is structured internally, otherwise the densely packed notes are difficult to decipher and remember.
The WCSM music theory grade 1 curriculum is based on the syllabi of ABRSM, Trinity, and NZMEB, covering the content of their Grade 1 levels. The aim is to equip students who take the course with the ability to participate in any of these three exams after one year (although the participation in exams is optional). In addition to music theory, the course will incorporate basic training in ear training, rhythm, and site-reading.
