Mary Smith

music makers

Originally from the UK, Mary has been in NZ for nearly 10 years. Music has always been a huge part of her life. She began violin study at age 4 (Suzuki method), sang in choirs from the age of 9, and plays both the guitar and piano. Music has taken her around the world, from performing in the Royal Albert Hall in London to Esterhazy Palace in Hungary to St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York and now in various locations around NZ.

Mary gave up a career as an Occupational Therapist working in mental health to focus on teaching and performing music. She is a tutor for Sistema Waikato – a social development programme that uses group music-making to facilitate positive changes in children, their families and communities. She plays violin in the Trust Waikato Symphony Orchestra and String Trio, Amoroso, who regularly play at weddings and events. She is also Mum to a wonderful (and musical!) two-year-old boy.
